5 Common Mistakes with Curly Hair That You Should Avoid!

Have you decided to start your hair transition and are feeling lost? Then, I want to talk directly to you! With so much new information to learn, it’s normal for some details to slip through the cracks when caring for curly hair.

But that’s where the danger lies! After all, it’s not just the products we use that make a difference in the health of our curls. In fact, there are some common and seemingly harmless habits that can also affect the hydration and definition of curly hair. That’s why I’ve put together the main mistakes you might be making when caring for your locks. Ready to start a new relationship with your curls?! 🫂

Washing Curly Hair Every Day 💆

This is certainly one of the most common mistakes made by those starting to embrace curls. Many people don’t know that curly hair tends to be drier due to its spiral shape, which prevents the natural oils from circulating through the strands.

For this reason, the washing interval for these tresses can be a bit longer. Most of the time, you can wash your curly hair 2 to 3 times a week without it looking dirty or greasy.

Drying Curly Hair with a Regular Towel 🧖‍♀️

It’s no secret that frizz is one of the biggest enemies of curly hair. But did you know it can be related to how you dry your hair? That’s right, Lolete, this issue isn’t just a result of lack of hydration.

In fact, frizz can also arise when you don’t use a cotton towel to dry your hair. Traditional towels are often made from materials that create friction between the strands, increasing frizz and porosity. So, the trick is to always choose microfiber or cotton models to avoid frizz and help define your curls.

Tying Wet Curly Hair Up 👩‍🦱

We already know that curly hair tends to be naturally finer and more sensitive. But when we think about wet hair tied up, the situation can get even trickier. Besides increasing the chances of breakage, this habit also harms curl definition—since the pressure from the elastic deforms the strands. Oh, and if you’ve had or currently have dandruff, tying your hair can cause even more issues. So, it’s better to let your hair be free after washing.

Not Using Products Specifically for Curly Hair 🧴

If you’ve been someone who picked any shampoo and conditioner, it’s time to change that! One of the first rules in caring for curly hair is to choose products that meet the needs of this hair type. After all, that’s the only way you’ll achieve more definition and less frizz. In these moments, I always recommend our Meu Cacho, Minha Vida line. With shampoo, conditioner, leave-in cream, and a hydrating mask, it delivers everything you need to create defined and healthy curls. Plus, the combination of plant extracts and patauá oil provides a moisturizing action that combats frizz.

Applying Hydrating Mask on the Roots of Curly Hair 👎

You’ve probably heard that those with curly hair LOVE a good cream, right?! These products are great at saving hair from frizz while ensuring good definition. But all these benefits won’t help if you don’t know how to use them. When applying leave-in cream, for example, don’t put the product directly on the roots. This can hinder the growth of curly hair, and the buildup of cream can lead to dandruff and other problems. The ideal is to always keep one or two fingers’ width away from the roots when applying the product, okay?!

This way, you can bet it’ll be easier to keep your curly hair looking beautiful and healthy. Have you noted down the tips, Lolete?

Kisses,

Lola Gênia 💋
